An 18-year-old Hilo man was charged last week for allegedly breaking into a car parked in downtown Hilo earlier this month and stealing a duffle bag.

Makalii Kahumoku-Jose was arrested on Nov. 13 after a 41-year-old Kurtistown woman discovered that her vehicle parked in front of a Keawe Street business had been entered.

Police said security video footage led officers to Kahumoku-Jose.

On Thursday, the suspect was charged with first-degree unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and second-degree theft.

His bail was initially set at $4,000.
