Macy’s Department Stores announced that it’s hiring 80,000 temporary employees nationwide during the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Nationally, the Cincinnati-based retailer is hiring 2,000 more seasonal workers this year than last year.

“Macy’s traditionally implements one of the most robust holiday hiring programs in American retailing, and that will be the case again in 2012,” said Terry Lundgren, chairman, president, and CEO in a released statement.

Three of the retailer’s 13 Hawaii stores are on the Big Island: Makalapua Center in Kailua-Kona, King’s Shops in Waikoloa, and Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.

To date, only job openings for seasonal employees at Macy’s Hilo location have been advertised. It is unknown how many job positions are available; Macy’s representatives did not respond to phone calls seeking exact employment figures.

According to their job posting on employment site monster.com, Macy’s is looking for temporary holiday retail associates to work a variety of hours, including early morning and evening or weekend shifts.

The company is seeking employees who are enthusiastic, friendly, able to work flexible hours, have strong interpersonal skills, and can work as part of a team. Previous retail experience is preferred but not required.
