A 61-year-old Ka`u man involved in a shooting Sunday in Ocean View was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, assault and eight firearms offenses.

Bail for John O’Leary, a resident of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, was set at $68,000. He was being held at the Kona police cellblock pending an initial court appearance today.

O’Leary, who was initially identified by police as being 62 years old, allegedly fired several shots at a longtime acquaintance visiting his home Sunday afternoon. One of the bullets struck the man in the thigh before the victim wrestled the gun away from O’Leary.

O’Leary also allegedly struck the man with a baseball bat before the victim fled in his vehicle.
