Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park has announced the following flight operations for March:

  • March 5 between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. for fountain grass control and mapping, near Keanakākoʻi area, Pepeiao and Keauhou from sea level to 4.000-ft. elevation.
  • March 11 and 14 between 10 a.m. and 12 noon for external sling loads of equipment, tools and camping gear to Keauhou shelter for backcountry trail maintenance between 50- and 3,300-ft. elevation.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.

Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
