Honolulu surfer bit in leg by 8-foot tiger shark, state reports

Reports indicate an 8-foot tiger shark caused leg injuries to a 58-year-old Honolulu surfer early Easter Sunday morning at Kewalo Basin in Honolulu.

Emergency medical services was called just before 7 a.m. and treated the man, who was transported to a trauma center, according to the Hawaiʻi State Department of Land and Natural Resources.

People who came to the man’s aid reported they saw a shark return, acting aggressively.

The state Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officers and Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards posted shark warning signs, cautioning all surfers and swimmers to stay out of the area until noon on Monday. A dive boat with 30 passengers left the area after being cautioned about the possible shark presence.

Standard shark protocols call for signs to stay up until lifeguards confirm the area is clear.
