The Hawai’i Youth Resources map provides interactive mapping showing activities for youth from newborn to 21 years of age. Public libraries and public, charter, and private schools throughout the state are also included on the map.

“This map allows us to visually see where schools, libraries, and youth programs are situated across the islands,” explains Abbey Seitz, the HYSD Outreach Coordinator who helped to create the interactive map feature. “We hope this map will not only be used by youth, families, and youth serving organizations, but eventually by decision makers to better understand where resources for youth are distributed.”

The map is accessible on any computer, smart phone, or tablet through the Hawai’i Youth Services Directory and Hawai’i After School Alliance websites.

According to Project Director Karen Umemoto of the University of Hawai’i Department of Urban and Regional Planning, the interactive map is a first step towards creating a tool that policy makers can use to visually see where services and programs are concentrated or where they are absent.

“Policy makers can really benefit from visually seeing where existing programs are situated,” said Umemoto. “This would help us as we manage and advocate for resources for youth and families in Hawaiʻi.”
