Waikoloa Community Emergency Response Team and the Hawai’i Wildfire Management Organization has teamed to up to hold a free public workshop on fire extinguishers at the Waikoloa Stables on Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The event falls in line with Fire Prevention Month and Fire Prevention Week, which commemorates the Oct. 8, 1871 Great Chicago Fire. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire took the lives of 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and destroyed more than 17,400 structures, burning 2,000 acres of land.

Event organizers say the Waikoloa Workshop will educate attendees on the importance of using fire extinguishers. The Fire Triangle, PASS, extinguisher types, and various techniques are also on the agenda. Participants will even have the opportunity to use real fire extinguishers as practice.

Waikoloa Stables is located on Waikoloa Road, a quarter mile north of Highlands Shopping Center.
