Parker Ranch Pasture Fire Burns into Third Day

Hawai’i County Fire Department crews are out for a third consecutive day continuing to put out a fire on Parker Ranch land in Waimea that is described as a “rough terrain pasture area.”

Battalion Chief Joe Farias says that the fire began at about 2:30 p.m. Friday. A flyover assessment on Saturday morning estimated that the fire burned 71 acres. An update to that number is expected late Sunday.

An eye witness tells Big Island Now that the fire was located about 1-2 miles away from property owned by West Hawai’i Concrete. Farias says that no properties or structures have been threatened.

HFD personnel have had some trouble accessing some portions of the fire because of the terrain, with features like deep gulches and ravines, but Farias said that they have been able to set up a fire break around the perimeter of the blaze.

Multiple agencies have assisted HFD in working to control the blaze. According to Farias, personnel from Parker Ranch and Pohakuloa Training Area have joined in at various times to work alongside firefighters.
