Overnight webcam imagery of the Kīlauea summit showed active lava remains restricted to the northeastern parts of Halemaʻumaʻu crater and outside the crater known as the downdropped block.

This morning, Hualalai was barely visible as it was shrouded in the voggy haze.

As of Sunday, permanent air quality monitoring stations across the state report that air quality levels are elevated at the Ocean View and Pāhala air quality monitoring stations.

On Thursday morning, one day after Kīlauea began erupting at 4:44 a.m. on Wednesday, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has lowered  alert levels because the initial high effusion rates of lava and gas have declined, and no infrastructure is threatened. 

During eruptions, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory aims to characterize both the chemistry and amount of gas being emitted. 

Activity from the latest Kīlauea eruption is concentrated in a large lava lake in the eastern half of the summit crater and a smaller lake to the west.

A new University of Hawaiʻi collaborative study by a team of experts estimates vog (volcanic smog) will have detrimental impacts on student test scores, especially students on the Big Island.

“The [Mauna Loa] lava flow is advancing sideways to the west and east about as fast as it is moving forward,” said Ken Hon, Scientist-in-Charge of Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Over the past 24 hours, the Mauna Loa lava flow is moving at an average of about 40 feet per hour while it is on relatively flat ground as it creeps toward Saddle Road, now just 2.4 miles away.

Big Island Now will provide information about the Mauna Loa eruption as it is made available. This information will be updated regularly.

Vog, the hazy mixture of sulfur dioxide gas and aerosols, which can affect broad areas downwind of volcanic eruptions, moved back into the air — and lungs — of the Big Island for several days the first week of the new year and early last week.

Conditions are changing rapidly, and poor air quality causing health effects may be very localized.

The eruption began on the evening of Dec. 20 from the Halema‘uma‘u crater at the volcano’s summit.
