Police Stress Motorcycle Safety

Reckless driving was a factor in three of the four motorcycle fatalities this year, according to Sergeant Christopher Gali, who heads the Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit.

In light of these incidents, officers on the Big Island are increasing enforcement efforts to curb unsafe motorcycles. The are also focusing on motorcycle equipment violations.

The HPD offers these safety tips for motorcyclists:

Make sure the motorcycle is in good working condition.

Wear a helmet that meets federal safety standards.

Wear proper gear Know your bike’s limit. Stick to the speed limit.

Don’t tailgate other vehicles.

Be respectful of other drivers.

Don’t weave through traffic.

Always use your headlights.
