They use their whole body and breath to tell a story. In chant and song, young women aged 18 to 25, will compete in the night’s solo competition to be crowned this year’s Miss Aloha Hula.
The beautiful costumes, flora and fauna will pale in comparison to each young woman’s slight sway, gorgeously taken pause, and amazingly full sound emanating from delicate throats. In this large stadium, these women will fully voice their oli, or chant, without the use of a microphone. They will project their feelings through skillful voicing, and let their ancestral stories unfold through their bodyʻs movements. They will showcase an almost impossible grace and strength as they move upon the stage to bring their kumu, their halau, and their culture, worldwide renown.
The competition begins at 6 p.m. on April 12, at the Edith Kanakaʻole Tennis Stadium. If you couldn’t get tickets to this event, don’t fret. This event will be broadcast on the television station, KFVE from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
The Edith Kanakaʻole Tennis Stadium is located at 350 Kalaniakoa Street in Hilo.
