Investigative Journalist Sonia Shah will speak at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo on Thursday, March 1, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. in UCB room 100. Shah has authored critically acclaimed books on science, human rights and international politics.
Shah’s talk centers around her new book, Pandemics: Tracking Contagions, from Cholera, Ebola and Beyond, which the Wall Street Journal describes as a “lively, rigorously researched and highly informative read.”
Over 300 infectious diseases have newly emerged or re-emerged over the past 50 years, and many epidemiologists expect that one of them will cause a disruptive, deadly pandemic sometime in the next two generations. Shah discusses which pathogen might cause the next pandemic, how, and if there is a unique impact to island communities.
The event is sponsored by the UH Hilo Philosophy Department, the Hawaiʻi Island Philosophy Club, the Gender and Women’s Studies Program, American Association of University Women – Hilo and the UH SEED IDEAS Grant.
