University of Hawai’i at Hilo guard Kim Schmelz earned her first weekly award from the PacWest Conference on Monday.

Schmelz was named the PacWest Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for games played between Jan. 25-31.

UH-Hilo was 1-1 in the two games it played last week. Schmelz, from Rancho Murrieta, Calif., averaged 12.5 points and eight rebounds per game in that time frame. She scored 13 points in a close loss to nationally-ranked Cal Baptist on Jan. 25. In Saturday’s win at Notre Dame de Namur, she dropped in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

For the season, Schmelz leads UH-Hilo with 13.1 points per game, 20 made three-point shots, and a .364 shooting percentage from outside the arc.

UH-Hilo will continue its four-game road trip at Dominican University on Monday, with the tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Hawai’i time.
