University of Hawai`i at Hilo sophomore hurler Jordan Kurokawa was named the Hawai`i Tourism Authority / PacWest Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for games played between March 17-23.

Kurokawa shared the award with Azusa Pacific junior Zach Hedges, who struck out 12 batters in a win against Cal State Dominguez Hills last week.

UH-Hilo went 3-4 last week to open a long 21 game road trip covering California, Utah, and Oahu. On March 18, Kurokawa pitched just two innings of near-flawless baseball, striking out two batters and walking another in the Vulcans’ 2-1 nine-inning loss.

Three days later, Kurokawa went the distance in UH-Hilo’s 5-1 victory over Academy of Art. He allowed one unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts to improve his record to 2-2 on the season.

On the season, the Maryknoll High School graduate has a 2.93 earned run average, best among starters. His 30.2 innings pitches is the most among UH-Hilo hurlers, as is his three complete games.

UH-Hilo is currently 10-13 overall and 7-7 in the PacWest conference. The Vulcans continue its long road trip Tuesday with a doubleheader at Academy of Art. Game one is scheduled for a 9:00 a.m. Hawai`i time start.
