People visiting the web site can bid on a variety of items, including gift certificates and services donated by local businesses.

In addition to the auction, supporters can also pledge financial support for the purchase of equipment and training items needed by the island’s fire and rescue personnel.

The foundation was created by Dr. Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre after their 25 year-old son died in a hiking accident in Pololu Valley in 1997.

Witnessing first hand the difficulties the Hawaii County Fire Department endured in retrieving their son’s body, the Sayres created a memorial foundation in their son’s honor.

Every year since their son’s death the Sayres have held an annual gala dinner honoring island firefighters, as well as holding a silent auction to raise funds for the fire department.

During the last 14 years the fundraisers have generated more than $600,000 in donations that is used exclusively for rescue equipment.
