Big Island residents encouraged to continue showing support and solidarity for Maui
Ceremonies and events were hosted Thursday throughout Hawai‘i — including in Hilo — to commemorate the 1-year anniversary of the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires that ravaged parts of Maui, especially the blaze that decimated historic Lahaina.

132 years after dying in the line of duty, Kohala captain honored during Police Week
Capt. T. N. Simeona, the pound master for the Kohala area on the Big Island near the end of the 19th century, was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 30, 1890. His story was told and his name added to the police memorial wall at the Hilo Police Station on Monday during the Hawai‘i Police Department’s National Police Week ceremony.
