Kona airport awarded $5.5M in federal funds for runway improvements
New grant money increases available funding for state’s ongoing rehabilitation project to restore and upgrade Runway 17-35 — the West Hawai’i airport’s only runway — to meet modern standards and ensure its long-term reliability.
Kīlauea Visitor Center at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park closed
Closure is necessary for renovations and rehabilitation at the center, which will include installing new exhibits, relocating and rebuilding restrooms and replacing the lānai with an expanded covered pavilion. The project is expected to take up to 18 months to 2 years to complete.

Plans for the new care center have been in development for 5 years and got a kick start this year by being awarded a $13,200 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. It should begin accepting patients this summer.

In 2022, Gov. David Ige signed into law House Bill 2171, which became Act 278, re-establishing the Hawai‘i Department of Public Safety as the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and transferring law enforcement functions to the new Department of Law Enforcement effective Jan. 1, 2024.
