Update: Wind advisory canceled for various areas of the Big Island
12:11 p.m. Friday update: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has canceled the wind advisory for various areas of the Big Island, as winds have fallen below the advisory threshold.
7:42 a.m. Friday update: The high wind warning is canceled but the wind advisory remains in effect till 6 p.m. for various areas of the Big Island.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu reports there will be northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with localized gusts to 50 mph.
Original post: The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for Hāmākua, North and South Kohala and Ka‘ū Districts through Friday.
Sustained northeast winds of 25 to 45 mph are expected with localized gusts of over 60 mph.
The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for North and South Kona, Puna, North and South Hilo Districts through Friday.
Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with forecasted localized gusts of over 50 mph.
Winds this strong can damage property, knock over trees, and make driving difficult and dangerous.
The public is advised to secure outdoor items. Stay clear of and report any downed trees, utility poles or lines to authorities.
Road closures could occur without notice.
Motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are advised to drive with caution.
