July Hawaiian Cultural & After Dark in the Park Events

During the month of July, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park continues to share its Hawaiian Culture and After Dark in the Park programs.

The park held its ‘Ohe Kāpala workshop on July 8 and the following programs will run through the end of the month.

All programs part of the Hawaiian Cullture and After Dark in the Park programs are free but park entrance fees apply.

How Do We View Kilauea?

On Tuesday, July 14 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Kumu Hula Manaiakalani Kalua and historian Philip K. Wilson will conduct a discussion on Kilauea’s place in Hawaiian culture and the history of science and where the two perspectives intersect and encounter one another. Kalua is a kumu hale and faculty member of the I Ola Haloa, the Center for Hawai’i Life Styles at Hawai’i Community College. Wilson is a professor of History at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The event will take place in the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.

Hawaiian Ethnobotany

HVNP Rangers will teach interested participants the uses and cultural importance of native plans and introduced Polynesian plants in Hawai’i during a hands-on event on Wednesday, July 22. Those who join will leave with ‘ike, wisdom, and a handmade craft. The group will meet on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai at 10 a.m. The activity will go until 12 p.m.
