#tsunami debris

A more than $350,000 grant from a national foundation will support research by a University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa scientist to answer a question: What about the damage imposed by everything else that tsunami waves sweep up, such as shipping containers, structures and vehicles?

While bigger floating items such as docks have been reaching the mainland’s shores, smaller items in the water are expected to reach Hawaii this winter.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is providing some funding to states likely to be affected by debris from the 2011 Japan tsunami.
