The May 10 incident began with a report of 3 men yelling in the area of Coral Parkway, between King Kamehameha Boulevard and Tiki Lane, and ended with a man whose sister says is mentally ill identifying 48-year-old Daniel Moriarty as the person who shot him with a rusty black powder revolver.

The 31-year-old also charged with carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony. His bail has been set at $1,100,000.

Behrendt was taken into custody after Ka‘ū patrol officers conducting area checks observed him crouched down behind a parked vehicle on a public roadway near the intersection of Paradise Parkway and Luau Drive.

39-year-old Alexander Alika Akau III of Waikōloa is being detained in the Kona Police Station cellblock and has not yet been charged with any crimes.

Dorson Behrendt, who also goes by the name “Buddy,” is described as 6 feet tall, 160 pounds, with blue eyes and blond hair.

As part of their ongoing investigation, police are seeking leads on what led up to the incident and who may have been responsible for the shooting.

Police had been searching for Kaena Kaohu, of Kea‘au, since Friday night after he was seen running from a residence on 34th Avenue in the Orchidland Estates subdivision armed with a handgun following a domestic argument with a brother.

Responding to a shooting on Aloha Boulevard reported around 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Ka‘ū patrol officers made contact with a 43-year-old male victim, also from Ocean View. The victim reported that while sleeping in a tent on his property he was approached by an unidentified female asking for assistance with her vehicle.

The 40-year-old is being held in lieu of $334,250 bail.

At 11:30 a.m. while on Kaiminani Drive, a Kona patrol officer was flagged down by a Kamuela man, 35, who reported that he and another male victim had been shot at by a male suspect while seated in their parked vehicle in the 73-4300 block of Lau‘i Street.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, South Kohala patrol officers responded to the area of Kawaihae and Akulani Road after a 31-year-old female victim reported she had been shot.

Keola Whitehead-Shibata was officially charged Thursday afternoon with second-degree attempted murder, ownership or possession prohibited, and carrying a firearm in the commission of a separate felony. He slated to appear in District Court for an initial appearance today.

Dylan and Leilani Alcain are set to appear in District Court in Kona on Monday.

As the Hilo grand jury convened, 44-year-old Ronald Kahihikolo appeared for a preliminary hearing in Kona District Court for the same case.
