Approximately 65 earthquakes were detected beneath the upper East Rift Zone.

No noticeable expansion in cracks caused by last week’s seismic swarm was detected by park staff.

Over the past 24 hours, there were approximately 67 earthquakes detected beneath Kīlauea’s summit and approximately 172 earthquakes detected beneath the upper East Rift Zone, mostly at depths of 0.0–1.2 miles beneath the ground surface.

Over the past 24 hours, there were approximately 25 earthquakes detected beneath Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera) and 95 earthquakes detected beneath the Upper East Rift Zone, mostly at depths of 0.6–1.8 miles beneath the ground surface.

While there are no signs of an imminent eruption, the largest of these earthquakes were four magnitude-3.0 events near the intersection between Chain of Craters Road and Hilina Pali Road in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

The Big Island volcano is not erupting, but that seismic activity during the past day is more than triple the rate from several days ago.

The tumbler occurred 9 miles east-southeast of Nāʻālehu at a depth of 23 miles below sea level at 1:43 p.m.

There have been roughly 15-20 earthquakes per hour in this region for most of the day. There continue to be a few scattered earthquakes within Kīlauea caldera, but no significant clusters of activity.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says that during the past day, moderate rates of seismicity have returned to the volcano’s southern summit region, extending from the area south of Halemaʻumau crater and southwest to the Koʻae fault zone.

While there is no sign of an imminent eruption, increased inflation and earthquake activity are expected to precede eruptive activity.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported signs of elevated unrest beneath the summit region Wednesday. No unusual activity has been noted along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone.

The tumbler struck at 4:31 p.m. and was 7.5 miles east-southeast of Pāhala at depth of 18.3 miles below sea level.
