Big Island nonprofits serving Native Hawaiians awarded grants

Projects that received funding were designed to strengthen Hawaiian cultural identity, support instruction in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, encourage ʻāina stewardship, prepare students for career readiness and help reintegrate those emerging from the justice system.

The Kako‘o grant will fortify La‘i‘ōpua 2020ʻs ability to deliver essential services to its Native Hawaiian community.

Laiōpua 2020 board & stone carving to help ʻohana perpetuate Hawaiian culture

Kalai Papa & Pōhaku begins on Aug. 25 and includes an orientation and six half-day sessions; at its end, each ‘ohana will have created a board and stone, which will last them a lifetime.
