Students from Hilo Intermediate, Waiākea Intermediate, Pāhoa Elementary, Kea’au Elementary and Pāhoa Intermediate schools on May 23 celebrated completing the DARE program.

The goal of Friday’s “Settle The Score” rally and sign-waving event was not just to raise awareness about a recent rash of school violence and bullying, but to also open people’s eyes to the hard reality that keiki everywhere face the same kind of injustice and start the conversation about about how the community can come together to make Big Island schools and those beyond safer.

$39 million in federal grants was awarded to the University of Hawai‘i to help increase the number of low-income students statewide who succeed in college.

Hawai’i Department of Health’s Safety and Wellness Survey showed that 84 schools across the state met over 90 percent of the Wellness Guidelines during the 2014-2015 school year.
