DOCARE officers have opened an investigation into the hit and run that killed a 12-year old nēnē in the popular Hilo park on Thursday morning.
64 cats, kittens captured at Queens’ Marketplace; relocated to Big Island homes
In reaction to a ban on feeding feral cats at Queensʻ Marketplace in Waikōloa Village in order to protect endanered nēnē, two local animal rescue organizations conducted a relocation project. They captured 64 felines and delivered them to homes across the Big Island — after being spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

During a protest at Queensʻ Marketplace on the Big Island, two women from Waikōloa were cited by state conservation and resources officers for “prohibited take of endangered species” by putting bowls of cat food on the ground.

Fifty years ago nēnē, a rare goose and the Hawaiʻi State bird, was a species on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 30 geese in the wild statewide. They are still endangered and federally protected.
