Detectives charged 52-year-old Christopher Roy Howlind of Kurtistown with second-degree murder following the violent slaying of his mother-in-law, 58-year-old Teri Lynn Apple, in Orchidland Estates in Puna on the Big Island.

Spenser Jordon Feary of Hilo was charged with first-degree theft and first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, according to the Hawai‘i County prosecutor’s office. First-degree theft is a Class B felony carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years is prison.
