On Thursday, the Hawai‘i County Council Communications, Reports and Council Oversight Committee listened to an update from Public Works Director Steve Pause on the progress of conducting the Puna Alternate Routes Study.

The long-awaited road project in Pāhoa will begin construction in late September, according to Hawaiʻi County’s public works department.

While the work is being performed, traffic will be reduced to one lane of alternating travel.

Motorists should use Ponahawai Street as an alternative route to and from Kīlauea Avenue during the closure period.

During the closure, motorists are advised to use Manono Street or Ponahawai Street as alternative routes to access the back side of Pauahi Street.

At least 20 houseless individuals living near a canal in downtown Hilo are now taking shelter in temporary shade tents on a vacant gravel lot on the southeast side of Ponahawai Street.

The event will feature activities and resources focused on children and families, in addition to the regular program.

The work on Pauahi Bridge will start July 8.

Beginning June 24, the work schedule will be Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Department of Public Works Highway Division has announced it will install three raised crosswalks in front of Kohala Elementary, Middle, and High Schools from June 17 to 21, causing lane closures.

The affected streets for this project will be Williama Place, Melekahiwa Place, Melekahiwa Street and Mikahala Place.

This closure is necessary to safely facilitate the delivery and installation of the bridge planks using a heavy equipment crane.

To combat the rising costs of housing, healthcare, and daily essentials Mayor Mitch Roth announced during the State of the County address his plan to ask the Hawai‘i County Council to decrease property taxes based on a close examination of the county budget.

The project will include roadway asphalt concrete repaving, shoulder construction, concrete curbs, pavement striping, markings, street signs and the addition of bike lanes on both sides of Lanikaula Street between Manono Street and Kīlauea Avenue.
