‘Hard’ demolition underway of Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Hotel following inauspicious start
As demolition got underway Monday, it was postponed briefly because of a vehicle parked in a coned and taped-off section of an adjacent hotel had to be moved out of concern debris could fall on it. Then, the excavator sprung a hydraulic leak, temporarily shutting down work again.
Staff, community remember former Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Jaggar Museum as demo nears completion
The observatory’s tower on the edge of the Kīlauea caldera inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will be demolished today after work was postponed from Thursday. It is the last remnants of the former observatory and museum complex that was closed after it was damaged beyond repair in 2018 during the 2018 eruption, lava flow and summit eruption of the Big Island volcano.

Momentum for the revitalization of the area on the Big Island’s Waiākea Peninsula picked up steam after Hawai‘i Gov. Josh Green signed an emergency proclamation in July to help clean up, secure and demolish the former Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Hotel property.
Demolition of former Uncle Billy’s in Hilo could begin by the end of this year
Because of recent actions by the Hawai’i County Council and Hawai‘i Gov. Josh Green, there is a mandate to fast track demolition of the abandoned 148-bedroom structure that formerly was Uncle Billy’s Hilo Bay Hotel along Banyan Drive.
