Standing granted for 3rd petitioner opposed to controversial proposed Punalu‘u development
The owners association of Colony 1 at Sea Mountain, which had its petition for standing derailed earlier this year because of a technicality, now joins two other organizations that were granted standing in May, in contesting a special management area use permit application requested by Black Sand Beach LLC for the proposed Punalu‘u Village adjacent to the popular Ka‘ū black sand beach park that shares its name.

The Hawai‘i County Windward Planning Commission heard about 5 hours of additional public testimony, a majority of which was again in opposition to the Black Sand Beach LLC residential and community project that would be located on the former Sea Mountain resort.

All seven members of the Board of Land and Natural Resources agreed to allow Judge Amano to remain on the hearing, despite objections raised by a group of petitioners who questioned whether she could be impartial because of her family’s membership with the University of Hawai’i at Hilo’s ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center.
