Biden plans to serve out the remainder of his term in office, which ends at noon ET on Jan. 20, 2025.

The funding comes from a new grant program based on U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz’s “Yes In My Backyard” legislation.

The funding will be used to reconstruct roadways adjacent to and at the intersection of Bayfront Highway and Waiānuenue Avenue.

The US Senate on Thursday passed the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which included several provisions authored by US Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i). The bill contains measures to address air tour noise in Hawai‘i, improve air tour safety, help airports adapt to extreme weather, and establish a Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary at the Department of Transportation’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The new funding is a 30 percent increase from last year. In addition to housing, Schatz secured $175.5 million in new federal funding for Tribal transportation activities.

U.S. Sen. Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) led the Hawai‘i Congressional delegation in urging the Internal Revenue Service Commissioner, Danny Werfel, to extend the 2023 federal tax filing and payment deadlines for individuals and businesses impacted by the Maui wildfires.

The U.S. Senate passed the first half of a bipartisan appropriations deal on Friday, Mar. 8, which aims to deliver billions in federal funding for critical programs that benefit Hawai‘i.

Additional earmark funding for Hawai‘i is expected to be included the second half of the funding deal which is set to be announced on March 22.

This legislation would recognize the cost-of-living challenges that hospitals in Hawai‘i and Alaska face and would increase reimbursement for hospitals in both states to ensure that they can continue to serve seniors.

According to a press release from the University of Hawai‘i, the system will have 24 fiber pairs with a design life of 25 years and is expected to be ready for service in late 2026.

Both Nānue and Hakalau bridges require significant rehabilitation to maintain operations along State Route 19 which is key for freight and a primary route of commercial vehicles traveling between Hilo and Kona.

On Thursday, the federal agriculture department began seeking information from Hawai‘i stakeholders about food costs and how SNAP can better serve the state’s communities. Information gathering will continue through March 4.

The funding comes from the Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program.

“In our second hearing in a series on fentanyl, federal witnesses outlined the challenges that they face as they work to address the health and public safety impacts affecting Native people,” said Vice Chairman Murkowski. 

The funding was recently announced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Park was among those recommended to President Biden by Hirono and Schatz, and a merit-based Federal Judicial Selection Commission, and was confirmed by a bipartisan vote of 53-45.

The funding, from the Port Infrastructure Development Program, follows Schatz-authored legislation signed into law last year that made it easier for Hawai‘i to compete for grant funding through this program.

The new grants will support Native American language use, revitalization, and instruction to advance the goals of the Native American Languages Act of 1990, which recognized the inherent rights and freedoms of Native Americans to use their Indigenous languages.
