6 PM: Erick Has Moved Past Hawai‘i Island

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center reports the center of Erick has moved past Hawai‘i Island and was approximately 310 miles SSW of Honolulu moving in a WNW direction at a speed of 9 miles per hour.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has cancelled the High Surf Warning for east-facing shores and the Wind Advisory for Hawai‘i Island.

The following are in effect:

• Whittington and Punalu‘u Beach Park camping permits and pavilion rentals are cancelled through the weekend.
• Bayfront Parking lot on Kamehameha Avenue will remained closed until further notice.
• The Hele-On buses will continue to pick-up passengers behind the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
• Issac Hale Beach Park will open tomorrow at 9 AM.

5:39 PM: WIND ADVISORY IS CANCELLED

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has cancelled the Wind Advisory. Winds have dropped below advisory criteria.

5 PM: FLOSSIE MOVES INTO THE CENTRAL PACIFIC

The center of Tropical Storm Flossie is located near latitude 17.9°N, longitude 141.0°W, about 930 miles E of Hilo.

Flossie is moving toward the WNW near 17 mph and this motion is expected to continue over the next 48 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 60 mph, with higher gusts.

Gradual weakening is anticipated over the weekend and will likely continue through early next week.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.42 inches.

5 PM: ERICK CONTINUES TO WEAKEN WELL SOUTH OF HAWAI‘I

The center of Tropical Storm Erick is located near latitude 17°N, longitude 159.2°W, about 310 miles SSW of Honolulu.

Erick is moving toward the WNW near 9 mph. This general motion is expected to continue during the next couple of days, with a loss of forward speed on Sunday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph, with higher gusts.

Weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Erick is expected to become a post-tropical remnant low on Saturday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles  from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.68 inches.

SURF: Swells generated by Erick will continue to affect portions of the main Hawaiian Islands tonight.

Central Pacific Hurricane Center reports the center of Erick has moved past Hawai‘i Island and was approximately 305 miles SW of Hilo moving in a W direction at a speed of 13 miles per hour.

The following advisories have been issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center:

• The High Surf Warning for east-facing shores of Hawai‘i Island remains in effect through this evening.
• A Wind Advisory for Hawai‘i Island remains in effect.
• The Flash Flood Watch and Advisory have been cancelled.

The following public safety measures and recommendations are now in effect:

• Issac Hale Beach Park will open tomorrow at 9 a.m.
• Whittington and Punaluu Beach parks will open at 3 p.m. today.
• All camping permits and pavilion rentals for these parks are cancelled through the weekend.
• South Point Road will be opened later today.
• The Bayfront Parking lot on Kamehameha Avenue will remained closed until further notice. The Hele-• On buses will pick-up passengers behind the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

11 AM: FLOSSIE ABOUT TO REACH THE CENTRAL PACIFIC

The center of Tropical Storm Flossie is located near latitude 17.5°N, longitude 139.5°W, about 1,030 miles E of Hilo.

Flossie is moving toward the WNW near 17 mph and this general motion with a slight decrease in forward speed is expected through early next week.

On the forecast track, Flossie is forecast to cross into the Central Pacific basin during the next few hours.

Maximum sustained winds are now near 65 mph with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is anticipated over the weekend and will likely continue through early next week.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.36 inches.

11 AM: ERICK CONTINUES TO WEAKEN WELL SOUTH OF HAWAI‘I

The center of Tropical Storm Erick is located near latitude 16.6°N, longitude 158.4°W, about 305 miles SW of Hilo and 325 miles S of Honolulu.

Erick is moving toward the west near 13 mph and a movement toward the WNW with a gradual loss in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph, with higher gusts.

Weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Erick is expected to become a remnant low by Sunday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.62 inches.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Erick will continue to affect the main Hawaiian Islands today, producing dangerous surf conditions, mainly along E- and SE-facing shores.

RAINFALL: Moisture associated with Erick will continue to spread over portions of the main Hawaiian Islands through early Saturday, bringing the potential for localized heavy rainfall. Total rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are possible, with localized higher amounts.

8 AM: TS Erick Moves West; TS Flossie 1,130 Miles ESE of Hilo

Tropical Storm Erick is centered about 220 miles SW of South Point on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.

Tropical Storm Flossie centered about 1,130 miles ESE of Hilo.

6 AM: Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Tropical Storm Update

As of 5 a.m. Friday, the center of Tropical Storm Erick was approximately 250 miles SW of Hilo at latitude 16.8°N and longitude 157.4°W, moving in a WNW direction at a speed of about 14 miles per hour.

Strongest sustained winds are estimated at 50 miles per hour with gusts near 60 miles per hour. Be aware that tropical storms are erratic and can change speed, direction and intensity quickly.

Due to the position, strength, and movement of Tropical Storm Erick the following advisories have been issued by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center:

• High Surf Warning for east-facing shores of Hawai‘i Island
• Wind Advisory for Hawai‘i Island
• Flash Flood Watch for Hawai‘i Island
• Flood Advisory for S. Hilo, Puna, and Ka‘ū Districts
• Small Craft Advisory for Alenuihaha Channel and windward waters

The following public safety measures and recommendations are now in effect:

• Public Works has sand available at their baseyards. Bring sandbags and shovel with you. If your property is flooding call (808) 935-0031 for assistance.
• Isaac Hale, Punaluu, and Whittington beach parks are closed. Camping permits for these parks are cancelled for this weekend. South Point road is restricted to local traffic only. The Bayfront parking lot on Kamehameha Avenue is closed. Hele-on pick-up is at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Park between the Butler buildings behind the auditorium.

Expect flooding conditions throughout the day. Be cautious when driving as conditions may be dangerous and roads may close at anytime.

5 AM: ERICK CONTINUES TO WEAKEN WELL SOUTH OF HAWAI‘I

The center of Tropical Storm Erick is located near latitude 16.8°N, longitude 157.4°West at about 250 miles SW of Hilo and 310 miles S of Honolulu according to the NWS Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu.

Erick is moving toward the WNW near 14 mph and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. A turn toward the NW and a decrease in forward speed is expected over the weekend. On the forecast track, the center of Erick will pass by well to the south of the main Hawaiian Islands today and tonight.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center.

Some gradual weakening is forecast during the next couple days. Erick is expected to become a tropical depression by Sunday, and a post-tropical remnant low Sunday night.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.53 inches.

SURF: Swells generated by Erick will continue to affect the Hawaiian Islands today, producing dangerous surf conditions, mainly along E- and SE-facing shores.

RAINFALL: Moisture associated with Erick will continue to spread over portions of the Hawaiian Islands through early Saturday, bringing the potential for localized heavy rainfall. Total rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are possible, with localized higher amounts.

5 AM: FLOSSIE FORECAST TO REACH THE CENTRAL PACIFIC LATER TODAY

The center of Tropical Storm Flossie is located near latitude 17.1°N, longitude 137.8°W, about 1,145 miles E of Hilo, according to the NWS National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Flossie is moving toward the WNW near 17 mph and this general heading with a slight decrease in forward speed is expected through early next week.

On the forecast track, Flossie is forecast to cross into the central Pacific basin later today.

Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph, with higher gusts.

Gradual weakening is anticipated over the weekend and will likely continue through early next week.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 29.33 inches.
