UPDATE: Walter Gomes III Charged With 19 Offenses

The Hawaiʻi Police Department has charged a Kailua-Kona man in connection with a shooting incident which occurred in the Kona district on, March 21, 2019, that left one woman seriously injured.
On Tuesday, April 2, investigators from the Area II Criminal Investigation Division charged 41-year-old Walter Gomes III, with multiple offenses stemming from the initial incident whereby a female sustained a single gunshot wound. The offenses include:
- Assault in the First Degree
- Assault in the Second Degree
- Ownership or Possession of Firearm Prohibited
- Reckless Endangering in the First Degree
- Carry/Possessing loaded firearm on a highway
- Resisting order to stop (MD)
- Resisting order to stop (FC)
- Excessive Speeding
- Resisting Order to Stop (MD)
- Terroristic Threatening in the First Degree
- Accidents Involving Damage to Vehicle or Property
- Terroristic Threatening in the First Degree
- Reckless Endangering in the Second Degree
- Resisting Order to Stop (FC)
- Reckless Driving
- Ownership or Possession Prohibited (Firearms)
- Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle
- Promotion of a Dangerous Drug
- Probation Violation
Total Bail Amount: $313,250
Gomes remains in police custody pending his initial court appearance for the charges.
UPDATE April 1, 11 a.m.:
The Hawaiʻi Police Department has arrested the suspect in a Kona shooting incident.
Kona patrol officers, acting on leads developed and tips from the community, located 41-year-old Walter Gomes III, in the Captain Cook area on Sunday afternoon, March 31, 2019.
Upon contacting Gomes, he was compliant with the officer’s verbal commands, and the officers were able to take him into custody without incident.
He is currently being held at the Kona Police cellblock while investigators from the Area II Criminal Investigations Division continue to compile their information stemming from the initial shooting incident, which took place near Maiau Street in Kailua-Kona on, March 21. He has not been charged.
“It is because of the police-community partnership, that we were able to successfully bring this situation to a close,” said Lt. Roylen Valera. “We continue to thank the community for their support and information.”

The Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Walter Gomes III has been arrested with no incident in the South Kona area by Kona Patrol officers on Sunday, March 31, 2019.
At about 7:07 p.m., Wednesday, March 20, 2019, patrol officers responded to the Kona Community Hospital, where a female party had been transported by private vehicle for a single, non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Police began to look for a suspect, identified as 41-year-old Gomes.
This information was provided by the authorities. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
