The Big Island Community Beach Clean Up on beaches from Miloli‘i to Puako is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, at 8 a.m.
Participants can check in at either the Old Kona Airport Park in Kailua-Kona or Puako Boat Ramp in South Kohala.
The morning will start with a pre-cleanup briefing. All participants will be instructed to avoid contact with any biohazardous material and directed instead to notify their chaperone, who will handle its disposal.

Each volunteer will then receive gloves, trash bags and a T-shirt. Volunteers will disperse to beaches of their choice—Kua Bay, Honokohau Harbor, Milolii and several other locations in between—where they will spend about three hours cleaning.
Children who participate must be accompanied by an adult.
Around 50 or 60 volunteers are also scheduled to meet in Na‘alehu to hit areas around South Point.

After the cleanup at around noon, participants will gather at the Old Kona Airport Park for lunch, music, giveaways, games and prizes.
The day will wrap up around 2 p.m.
Jeff Fear of the Big Island Wave Riders Against Drugs is a primary organizer of the event.

Fear and his group have organized surf contests and beach cleanups for 24 years, and their efforts have steadily grown. Along with the Big Island Wave Riders Against Drugs, County of Hawai‘i, Keep Puako Beautiful, West Hawaii Today and the Betty Kanuha Foundation are sponsoring the event.
Fear said more than 50 pounds of cigarette butts were collected at the Old Kona Airport Park last year.
