Ground was broken today for a new roadway that will improve traffic circulation south of Kailua-Kona.

The long-awaited 1,900-foot La`aloa Extension will connect Ali`i Drive to Kuakini Highway. It will provide mauka-makai access in the wide area between Royal Poinciana Drive to the north and the King Kamehameha III Road to the south.

The first phase will cost $7.8 million and will start with improvements at Kuakini to include a traffic signal and turning lanes. Isemoto Contracting was the winning bidder.

A second phase expected to go out to bid later this year will upgrade the existing La`aloa Avenue through the White Sands Beach subdivision.

The project is expected to be completed in mid-2014.
