UH-Hilo Student Receives Scholarships to Study in Japan

A University of Hawaii at Hilo student majoring in Japanese Studies has received two scholarships to study in Japan.

Senior Andrew Jackson Musick IV has received a $4,500 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and a $5,000 Freeman-ASIA Scholarship.

He will begin a year of study in April at the University of Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan where he will study Japanese and Uchinaguchi, the indigenous language of Okinawa.

Musick is an active member of Hui Okinawa and a drummer with Hui Okinawa Kobudo Taiko. He plays sanshin with Nidaime Tenshin Kai Hilo Shibu and teaches Classical Okinawan martial arts at the Waiakea Recreation Center.

The Gilman Scholarship was established to encourage students to select non-traditional study abroad destinations, and to support students traditionally under-represented in study abroad.

Freeman-ASIA, also known as the Freeman Awards for Study in Asia, is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia.
