This is the fourth traffic fatality on Hawai‘i Island in 2026, compared to five this time last year.

Police responded to a collision that involving an all-terrain vehicle that resulted in a man’s death late Saturday night in Honokaʻa.

High speed and alcohol, and/or drugs are believed to be factors in this collision, according to Hawaiʻi Island police.

Police are investigating the two-vehicle collision near the 13-mile marker on Daniel K. Inouye Highway in Hilo that left Judith Fitzgerald of Kailua-Kona dead on Christmas Eve.

A tragic two-vehicle collision on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway on Oct. 23 has now claimed its second victim, 3-week-old Aniana Masaichy.

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a collision involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle near the intersection of Waiānuenue Avenue and Rainbow Drive on Thursday night.

Hawai‘i Island police determined Franz Albert-Ludwig Weber was riding a black Trek bicycle heading south on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway when he rear-ended a green 2015 Motor Coach Industries tour bus stopped on the shoulder.

At this time, police believe that alcohol, inattention, and not wearing a seatbelt, were the primary factors in the crash.

Hawai’i Island police have secured nearly $160,000 in federal grants that will be used to conduct more community outreach, purchase new equipment, improve and enhance enforcement.

Two minutes after midnight, Hawaiʻi Island police responded to a vehicle collision in South Kona that killed a pedestrian, marking the first traffic fatality of 2025.

He was identified as 20-year-old Isaac Dakujaku of Hilo. The Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate the 2-vehicle collision as a negligent homicide. 

So far this year, there have been 467 DUI arrests compared with 479 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.5%.

Multiple witnesses confirmed 44-year-old Collins Kaholo of Volcano was standing by a stop sign prior to running into the road and in front of the truck.

On Aug. 24, 2022, at approximately 6:20 a.m., South Hilo patrol officers responded to the Puainako Street extension near mile marker 3 for a report of a male who had reportedly been struck by a vehicle.

This is the second fatal crash on Hawai‘i Island in less than 48 hours. The first was on Sunday afternoon in Hōnaunau.

The Feb. 4 collision took place on Mamalahoa Highway, near the intersection of Kaalualu Road in Na‘alehu.

Police believe that speed and impairment are possible factors in the crash. The 31-year-old was also not wearing his seat belt.

Inada was charged with Negligent Homicide in the Second Degree (caused the death of another person by operation of a vehicle in a negligent manner) and Collisions Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury.

Police investigators determined that a 2012 Toyota Highlander was traveling east on West Kawili Street and made a left onto Kapiolani Street at the intersection. The vehicle continued into the right-hand shoulder of Kapiolani Street and proceeded through a chain-link fence, coming to rest within an active construction area. There were no signs of braking and no other vehicles were involved.

When Hilo patrol officers responded to a single-vehicle traffic collision on Kilauea Avenue at 12:36 a.m. on Saturday, they determined that a 1990 Yamaha motorcycle operated by Wilson was traveling southbound on Kilauea Avenue just before the Puainako intersection, when it crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a utility pole.
