Each scholarship recipient and their parents will be honored July 20 during a special Lions Club of Kona Scholarship Awards Dinner at Teshima’s Restaurant in Kealakekua; the public is invited to attend.

The schools were damaged during the Kona low storm that occurred on March 14, when properties in Ka‘ū and South Kona were flooded and damaged.

While the immediate threat from the storm has passed, recovery efforts continue across the islands as state and county crews assess damage, clear debris and restore impacted infrastructure.

According to Hawai‘i Island police, officers responded to the school at 12:44 p.m. after a custodian reported seeing a firearm inside a passing silver-colored SUV, which was occupied by four males.

“Both defenses played great,” Konawaena coach Brad Uemoto said. “We couldn’t get nothing moving offensively. I mean, we had spurts and then we just couldn’t finish drives.”

Two students were awarded $500 for their essays about their volunteer service and connecting it with their specific communities.

According to a letter from the school administrators sent to parents, the lockdown occurred at 11 a.m.

High school graduation ceremonies across the state have been scheduled for the Class of 2024.

Lehua Norris, a 17-year-old senior at Konawaena High School, was elected from among the state’s top student leaders to participate in the annual United States Senate Youth Program.

The School Based Health Centers provide much needed services to families, including those with barriers to care: parents who are working multiple jobs, are underinsured or low income, families who speak English as a second language or for those who are newly arrived to this country.

Konawaena High School’s Class of 1973 recently celebrated their 50th class reunion Sam Choy’s in Keauhou-Kona. 

Students from Konawaena High School collaborated with parents, fellow high schoolers, and community stakeholders to organize a health and fitness field day at Hōlualoa Elementary.

The club awarded Mina Taniyama, Ryli Sasaki, Civic Gomes and Torrance Satta-Ellis with a $1,000 scholarship each, and Anuhea Spinola with a $500 scholarship towards a two-year degree or certificate.

The tradition of lei giving and receiving is an important part of high school graduations in the Aloha State. From the fragrant blossoms of the plumeria or tuberose to the candy and money lei, all are made with care and cherished by the receiver.

Project No Ke Ola Pono O Nā Keiki held a recent “Field Day” event at Hōnaunau Elementary, a small school in West Hawaiʻi, for students in kindergarten to fifth grade.
