No safety power shutoffs were implemented during the past few days as the electric utility monitored weather conditions in areas at high risk of wildfire exposure, especially with a wind advisory that was previously in place for the same locations.

That portion of the road in Pahala is CLOSED at this time because of flooding.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the temblor struck about 2 miles east-northeast of Pāhala in Kaʻū on the south-southeast side of the island at a depth of just 2 miles; it had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kīlauea volcanoes.

More than 155 “Felt Reports” were made from around the Big Island within the first half-hour after the quake struck.

More than 320 “Felt Reports” were made within the first 45 minutes after the temblor, with it being felt widely around the Big Island; aftershocks are possible within the coming days to weeks.

Motorists should plan for possible traffic delays and drive with caution when approaching the work zones; flagmen will also be at each site to provide traffic control.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu say surf along Big Island eastern shorelines has fallen today (Nov. 14) and will decline further through tomorrow as trade winds ease.

“These would be the highest single fountain and highest pair of fountains seen during this eruption,” said Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in a status update for the Big Island volcano at 10:05 p.m. Friday.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that the shaker struck at 8:28 p.m. Thursday 1 mile south-southwest of the Kaʻū community at a depth of 18 miles.

Waves of 10 to 14 feet are forecast this morning, decreasing to 8 to 12 feet this afternoon and 7 to 10 feet Monday for those shorelines in Puna, Kaʻū, North and South Kona and North and South Kohala. Flooding of beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion and saltwater inundation also will be an issue with continued coastal flooding.

Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet are forecast by Aug. 8 along the southern shores of the island, with wave heights increasing to between at least 10 and 14 feet by Aug. 9.

National Weather Service extended a wind advisory in effect for North Kohala and portions of South Kohala, North Kona, Hāmākua, Kaʻū and Puna, adding the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, as ridge of high pressure to north of state will keep same locations parched and primed for fires under the right conditions, despite National Weather Service not expected to issue any watches or warnings.

The National Weather Service Honolulu forecast office area forecast discussion from shortly before 4 a.m. today said fairly dry conditions with lower humidity levels coupled with those stronger winds also could produce elevated fire weather conditions over leeward areas late this morning into the afternoon.

The new infrastructure marks a major milestone in efforts by Hawaiʻi County to close large capacity cesspools in Kaʻū. Work gets underway July 7 and will entail connecting the 109 properties now served by large capacity cesspools to the new system, among other work.

The Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response survey will be conducted May 12-16 in Hilo, Puna and Kaʻū and is meant to give local health officials and their partners an idea of how prepared community members are if disaster were to strike.

Andrew Amon of Ocean View and Kaleo Mello of Nā‘ālehu were both located and taken into custody in separate Ka‘ū locations earlier this week by Big Island police.

Wind advisory in effect until 10 p.m. today (April 6) for North and South Kohala as well as parts of Kaʻū and Puna, including South Point, Pāhala and Kalapana.

There seems to be enough evidence of some sort of collapse happening, which remains the only such event in the volcano’s documented history, simultaneously with a dramatic eruption that caused Hawai’i’s largest ever recorded earthquake, a magnitude-7.9 temblor that resulted in a tsunami and landslide in Ka’u that killed more than 100 people and lava flows that inundated 9 square miles.
