Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources invites everyone in state to organize events on or about June 6 to mālama shorelines, waterways and community spaces that sustain life in Hawaiʻi.

30-day review period now open for Papahana Kāʻeuʻeu: Hawaiʻi’s Plan for Living Heritage Stewardship, which will guide how state, county agencies, Native Hawaiian organizations and communities work together to identify, protect and steward Hawaiʻi’s historic and cultural resources from 2026 through 2034.

Update pertains to Big Island game bird and game mammal hunting.

Surveys were led by Maui Nui Plant Extinction Prevention Program in partnership with Pūlama Lāna‘i, using on-the-ground exploration and drone technology to access steep cliffs and remote terrain.

Conservation stamp highlights the wild pig, while game bird stamp features the California valley quail, which was originally brought to the islands in 1818 as a gift to King Kamehameha.

These grants support preservation and protection of lands with natural, environmental, recreational, scenic, cultural, agricultural and historic value, while also providing public access and strengthening partnerships between government and community-based organizations.

A Hughes OH-6 Cayuse operated by Airborne Aviation crash-landed Thursday, March 26, 2026, on a sandbar about 100 yards off the coast at Kalaula Beach off Nā Pali Coast in northwest Kaua’i killing three of its five occupants and injuring the other two people who were aboard. Officials identified the helicopter as being operated by Airborne Aviation, with one pilot and four passengers aboard at the time of the crash Thursday at the remote beach on Nāpali Coast in northwest Kauaʻi.

Outdoor recreation — including camping, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, etc. — and boating or other water activities during inclement weather put not only yourself but first responders at greater risk in an emergency.

The ʻiʻiwi likely hatched in the winter/spring of 2015-16 and is a minimum of 10 years old, which is rather amazing considering the typical lifespan of ʻiʻiwi is, maybe, half of that at 3 to 5 years.

“These findings are significant because aquarium collecting has repeatedly been justified by claims of sustainability and rapid reef fish recovery once harvesting stops,” said For the Fishes Executive Director Rene Umberger. “Those claims are not supported by what actually happened on Hawaiʻi reefs.”

The findings challenges the conventional understanding of tiger sharks as purely solitary animals, revealing a predictable seasonal convergence of mature males and females that coincides with the humpback whale calving season in Hawaiʻi.
