The man was found underwater 30 feet from the rocky Kona shoreline where he was last seen.

A 59-year old female visitor in Nāʻālehu was in distress while swimming at Whittington Beach Park leading to bystanders bringing her to shore where she appeared to become unresponsive.

Police interviewed the victim’s boyfriend, witnesses and reviewed residential surveillance video leading up to the woman’s fall into the ocean.

The victim had been snorkeling when she started experiencing difficulties and was brought to shore by a bystander.

The woman fell off the cliffs in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision area and was swept out to sea.

At 7:50 a.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a call for a welfare check on the man, after the victim’s father called regarding his concern for the safety and whereabouts of his son.

Bystanders brought the distressed swimmer to shore and began CPR until Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel arrived on scene, however, attempts to resuscitate the man at the scene were unsuccessful.

The woman, identified her as Carol Mugleston of Layton, Utah, was in distress when she was brought out of the ocean by bystanders and given CPR.
