Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the communityʻs assistance in locating 86-year-old Michael “Jim” Clark, who has been reported missing.

For the past several weeks, Hawaiian Electric has been asking customers to conserve electricity due to the unavailability of several large generators and cautioned that rolling outages might be needed if generation fell short of demand.

Hawaiʻi Island police are renewing their request for information regarding 61-year-old Haunani Trask Gibson, of Pa‘auilo, who was reported missing in November 2023.  

“By integrating Kanu Hawai‘i’s system and their network of nonprofit organizations throughout the state, we are seamlessly connecting visitors with even more opportunities to improve our home for future generations,” said Daniel Nāho‘opi‘i, HTA’s interim president and CEO.

There Merrie Monarch Festival was recently named the top cultural festival in the United States in an online poll by USA Today’s 10Best. It’s just one of several examples during the past couple of years of the people, places, culture and things of Hawai‘i, including the Big Island, being nationally awarded or featured nationwide.

Kapa‘a Beach Park received the most votes with 158. It was followed by Hualālai (Four Seasons Resort) with 142, Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach Park with 123 votes, Hawaiian Paradise Park with 115 and Old Coast Guard Road rounded out the top 5 with 110 votes.

The week-long Merrie Monarch cultural festival is expected to draw thousands of participants and enthusiasts to Hawai‘i Island, which could mean increased crowds and limited parking at Hawai‘i’s five busiest airports. The Hilo International Airport in particular is expected to be busy throughout the festival week, and travelers flying into and out of Hilo should plan accordingly.

Initial funding for the project was released in January, a consultant has been hired and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers indicated it will fast-track the required permitting process.

The scammers are calling with altered caller ID numbers displaying Hawai‘i Police Department phone numbers, posing as police officers telling victims that they have outstanding warrants. The individuals then ask the victims to divulge personal information or make payments.
