Gov. Neil Abercrombie today released $134.7 million for capital improvement projects at schools around the state.
The funding included $41.7 million for repair and maintenance at facilities statewide that include re-roofing, electrical and plumbing upgrades and other work.
Another $2 million was earmarked for energy improvements and conservation efforts, including identifying those schools with higher-than-normal electricity usage. Abercrombie also released $1 million for the removal of hazardous materials at various schools.
Funding specifically for Big Island schools included:
$500,000 for additional work on an all-weather track and field facility at Waiakea High School to be shared with Hilo High School. The project includes replacement of grass with all-weather surfacing.
$350,000 for ADA-compliant playground equipment at Waiakeawaena Elementary School.
