Hawaiian Telcom experienced an equipment failure last night that cut high-speed internet service to its customers, and also left some Verizon Wireless customers in East Hawaii without cellular coverage.

The outage caused by the failure of a circuit board lasted from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. today, said Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida Fry.

Because the affected lines also provide service to cell towers, an unknown number of Verizon customers were left without cell phone or wireless internet service, said Heidi Flato, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman located in California.

The affected area extended from Ookala on the Hamakua Coast to Volcano, and included Hilo and Puna, Flato said.
