Puna ‘Ulu Festival Saturday at Pu`ala`a
The Puna ‘Ulu Festival, a celebration of breadfruit, will take place Saturday at the Kua O Ka La Public Charter School campus at Pu`ala`a, near the Ahalanui Beach Park also known as “Hot Pond.”
The festival scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 2, will include a cooking contest and demonstrations, and a buffet lunch featuring breadfruit and coconut dishes.
It will also feature presentations on growing and selecting ‘ulu. Music will be provided as well as demonstrations on such things as making kapa from ulu bark and cordage and pahu drums from coconut trees. Games and face-painting will be provided for youngsters.
A free shuttle service will be offered from Isaac Hale Beach Park from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sponsors include the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Kamehameha Schools, the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Doc Buyers Fund, Café Pesto and Madre Chocolate.
