BIIF Boys Hoops Tourney Begins Wednesday

Now that the girls basketball season has concluded, the stage has been left for the guys to earn their right to play for a state championship.

The KTA Super Stores / Big Island Interscholastic Federation Boys Basketball tournament begins Wednesday with quarterfinal action in Division I and Division II. All quarterfinal contests begin at 7:00 p.m. at the gymnasium of the higher seeded school. Semifinal and championship games will be played at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

In Division I, Hilo High School (21-5, 10-2 BIIF) and Konawaena High School (25-3, 10-0) earned opening round byes by finishing at the top of their respective regions. Hilo will face the winner of the Kamehameha-Hawai`i / Kealakehe game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while the Wildcats will take on the Kea`au / Waiakea winner at 6:00 p.m. the same day.

Teams earning byes in Division II include Pahoa High School (13-8, 7-5) and Hawai`i Preparatory Academy (9-10, 6-4). The Daggers will face the winner of the St. Joseph / Kohala quarterfinal. In the other quarterfinal, Honoka`a will visit Ka`u for the right to take on Hawai`i Prep.

The BIIF will send two teams each to the Division I and Division II state tournaments on Oahu. The Hawaian Airlines / Hawaii High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball Championships begin Wednesday, February 20 on Oahu.
