Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered that all national and Hawaii flags at state offices and agencies be flown at half-staff Saturday in remembrance of Alexander “Lex” Hofgaard Brodie.

Saturday is the day of public memorial services for Brodie, a former member of the state Board of Education and prominent Hawaii businessman.

Brodie died Jan. 11 at the age of 98.

Originally from Kauai and a former Waikiki “Beach Boy,” Brodie served on the board from 1992 to 2003 and was known to make unscheduled inspections of public schools around the state.
