Police late this afternoon said the remains of a badly decomposed body found last Friday off Stainback Highway are those of Shayne Yoshi Kalani Kobayashi, a Pahoa man missing for more than six weeks.

Kobayashi, 38, was last seen at his home on Dec. 11. Police said today that his remains were identified through dental records.

Police made a public appeal for help locating Kobayashi on Wednesday, while they were still trying to identify the remains found Friday in the area of an ATV park off Stainback.

They said Kobayashi’s remains were found during a search for another missing man, Dante Gilman of Kurtistown.

Another decomposing body found on Tuesday in a different area off Stainback Highway following an anonymous tip had not yet been identified.

Police said today that foul play is believed to be involved in Kobayashi’s disappearance, and are awaiting additional testing and toxicology findings to determine his exact cause of death.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Det. Todd Pataray at 961-2382 or by email at [email protected].
