Two police officers who were shot last Wednesday have been released from Hilo Medical Center.

Assistant Chief Henry Tavares said the police officers were released from the hospital on Sunday.

The officers have not yet returned to duty. Tavares said that wouldn’t happen until they are fully recovered and it is as yet unclear when that would occur.

Tavares said one of the officers sustained a gunshot wound to the hip and the other was wounded in his calf.

They were identified last week as Garrett Hatada, 40, a 14-year veteran of the police department and Joshua Gouveia, 31, who has been an officer for four years.

Keaka Martin, the 31-year-old Hilo man arrested on Thursday in connection with the shootings, remains in Hilo Medical Center where he is being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Tavares said Martin, who has been charged with nine crimes in connection with the shooting, remains in critical condition.

Martin allegedly shot the officers in the parking lot of The Pono Place on Kilauea Avenue after they responded to reports of gunfire nearby.

Martin then fled the scene on foot, running toward the Hilo Lagoon Centre. Tavares said Martin was identified through video images taken by security cameras at the building which houses a variety of businesses and condominiums.

Martin, who was shirtless, was identified through his tattoos which were recognized as a result of his previous arrests.
