2-Car Collision in Honoka`a Injures 7

A full-sized van and a four-door sedan collided on Route 19 Tuesday afternoon, injuring seven people and blocking traffic for several hours.

Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene of the accident just before 1:10 p.m. and found that both vehicles had sustained extensive front-end damage.

Seven people were involved in the accident, six of whom had managed to exit the vehicles by the time fire fighters arrived. One person needed assistance in being extricated.

All of the people injured in the crash were transported to medical facilities using full spinal precautions. Three people were transported to Hilo Medical Center, one via helicopter. The remaining persons were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea.

A total of 16 fire department personnel responded to the accident.

Traffic was detoured to Mamane Street in Honoka`a while police investigated the crash.
