Oil leaking from a blown engine of a Hele-On bus resulted in the closing of both lanes of Highway 19 for more than three hours Saturday night.

The incident began at around 5 p.m. near the 22-mile marker on the Hilo side of Maulua Gulch.  At that time police sent out a Nixle emergency message asking motorists to take alternative routes if possible, including Saddle Road for those heading cross-island.

A police department spokeswoman said the leaking oil extended through most of the gulch.

Both lanes had been reopened by 8:30 p.m.
